GE’s “Momsperience” and a killer recipe for Mint Juleps.

We will begin featuring the women from Issue 3 next week, so we’re playing around and sharing some things that have been going on with the magazine on Amuse Bouche. We have had a jammed-packed few weeks. Not only has a new issue of the magazine come out, but we did 2 back-to-back events that we can’t wait to tell you a bit about. (And share a recipe, of course!)

First up is a trip to Louisville to photograph two food bloggers attending an event at the headquarters of GE Appliances.

Without giving away too much from the feature, I want to fill you in on some things that we did there. (Because, hello! Food, shiny appliances and women…it really is RIGHT up our ally!)

Despite the fact that I remain bitter that there was no HINT of Jack Donaghy, we had a great experience at GE.

We met some GREAT bloggers (Image courtesy of Alison from The House of Hepworths. I adored meeting her. She completes me.)

Aside from fabulous women, we met James P. Campbell, President and CEO of GE Lighting and Appliance and we also met Greg Fischer, the Mayor of Louisville.

We got to cook with the stellar (and hilarious) GE Monogram Chefs in their gorgeous kitchens. (I made Red Eye Gravy, y’all. That was a first!). We learned about the ins and outs of different lines of GE appliances, and I was fascinated by the technology behind Induction Cooktops and the Advantium Oven. (Which I personally found intriguing and amazing even though it had a gajillion settings and a learning curve that is scary to me since I don’t even use the popcorn function on my microwave.) We got to ask every question we could think of about GE and all their products and I loved all of it.

We weren’t just there to learn and lust over glorious cooking gadgets, we also had a whole lot of FUN. From writing down our “Laundry Confession” (Don’t judge me!)….

…to amazing food and having GORGEOUS Kentucky Derby hats made for by a high-end local milliner to wear to a dinner at Churchill Downs, GE pulled out all the stops to make sure everyone had a great time. (And we totally did!)

I can’t wait to see how the feature on these women turns out!

Until we can see the magazine, I’ll leave you with a little taste of Kentucky and our experience with a recipe for the traditional drink of Churchill Downs and The Kentucky Derby-The Mint Julep. (I tasted my first one on this trip. It was, um…strong. Heh!)

KENTUCKY DERBY MINT JULEPS

Ingredients

2 cups water
2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup mint leaves, packed
32 ounces Kentucky bourbon
8 sprigs mint, fresh, for garnish

Directions

Rinse and chop mint.

Set aside 8 sprigs for garnish.

Combine water, sugar, and chopped mint in a small sauce pan. Bring to a medium boil and reduce by 1/3. Allow syrup to cool. Strain to remove mint leaves. Fill 8 silver julep cups or tall Collins glasses with shaved ice and pour 4 ounces of bourbon and approximately 1/4 cup mint syrup depending one’s desired sweetness.

Cut a straw so it reaches about one inch over the rim of the cup. This allows imbibers to take in the minty aromas. Garnish with a mint sprig. Serve immediately.

Drink and enjoy! (Preferably while wearing a stunning hat!)

Thanks to Megan, Allison and Nancy from GE for their hospitality and to all the wonderful, delightful people below that we met there. We look forward to seeing you in the pages of the magazine!
