On The Front Burner with Megan Butters Rae

Megan Butters Rae grew up on the farm—MaryJanesFarm. She attended Gonzaga University and received a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. After marrying her college sweetheart, they moved to Kansas and bought their first home on a cobblestone street.

Her love for writing, editing, eating, and well, her Mom, finally brought her back to the farm. Raising her 4-year-old and 2-year-old girls and working alongside her husband, mother, and siblings at the family farm is the perfect lifestyle mix for Megan.

She helps in the writing and editing of both MaryJanesFarm magazine and indulging in a bit of crafty projects here and there, some cooking, and whatever other interesting projects come her way.

Between work and her two girls, boredom doesn’t exist. In her spare time, she is the first to volunteer to host a party. She’s a believer in good food and good company. Along those lines, Megan also runs MaryJanesFarm unique wall tent Bed & Breakfast during the summer months. Her job entails everything from gathering fresh eggs and strawberries at dawn for the day’s breakfast to planning a couple’s 25th anniversary vow renewal—any job that requires an apron!

She rounds life out with travel across the country for work alongside her mother and to visit her five dearest college girlfriends who she loves with all her heart (they’ve all been in each other’s weddings and celebrated each other’s babies). Her two girls’ favorite pretend games are caring for their babies, cooking, and/or traveling. Influenced by their mother just possibly?

On the Front Burner with Julie Cove

You may remember Julie Cove of The Alkaline Sisters from The Creative Connection Event. We featured several of her recipes in preparation for the conference. We are thrilled to have a whole week of Julie and know you will enjoy her stories and recipes as much as we do!

Who Knew? – that because of a herniated disk I would be motivated to change my diet & lifestyle radically to eat completely alkaline and some how convince my sister to join me in this journey. Eeeek-she had no idea what she was in for and nor did I. After 18 months of on and off terrible sciatica pain and despair from a lack of relief no matter what external treatment I tried, having exhausted almost every option I could from, chiro, physio, acupuncture, aqua therapy, osteopath, surgery, cortisone shots, on-line exercise programs and some serious medications for pain, I finally realized that I needed to heal from the “inside out – NOT the outside in”. This realization arrived in the way of a CT scan that I had to practically beg for. It showed my disc as unchanged from the 1st CT scan 18 mos prior with a 13 mm bulge- this is a huge bulging disc! Regardless of all the therapies, my body had not gone into action to begin repairing the bulge- it was incapable of improving the health of my disc because my inner terrain was obviously very unhealthy.

With a reference from a friend to a local alkaline lifestyle facilitator I was lead on a journey that began with a 3 day juice cleanse- really a “feast for your body”. Upon the realization of the radical shift I would have to make to my diet I felt desperate for camaraderie to be sure I would stay on track and have a support person- who better than my sister- who willingly embarked on this journey with me that neither of us knew would be so profound.

15 months ago we began. Initially we ate 100% alkaline leading to where we are currently eating 80% alkaline foods & 20% Acidic foods. The results have been astonishing and the education has been life changing. I am no longer in any pain with my disc and have been pain free for 12 months now as I have eliminated all the inflammation surrounding my disc that was caused by an overly acidic body and I also stopped taking every medication I was on for pain. I lost 30 lbs that I couldn’t shake with various other fad diets which also helped relieve pressure from my disk. My energy soared & my overall well being improved ten fold leaving me free of colds & flus. My sister has lost almost 50 lbs and is on a journey to return to her pre-pregnancy figure and is almost there. She has also experienced a complete shift in her well being.

Who Knew? We began with very little idea of what we were committing to and it has completely changed our lives and we can’t help but want to shout it out all over the world. So here we are with our new blog site, sharing what we have both become incredibly passionate about. It has brought us closer together and we have the comfort of knowing that we understand each other and we both crave and want to cook the most healthy food possible for our bodies and our families. So here’s to The Alkaline Sisters .com and to inspiring you and many others to choose a healthy alkaline lifestyle that will change your life. Our goal with our blog is to share our continuing experiences, the process, ideas, recipes, products, courses and resources.

We had such a fabulous weekend in St. Paul with The Creative Connection Event. Such a wonderful time to be inspired by so many amazing artists. Cristina Ferrare was a Keynote Speaker, and she truly is an inspiration. Please help me welcome Cristina to the Front Burner!

At the early age of sixteen, Cristina started a career in modeling with the Ford modeling agency in New York. Her career as a super model spanned over twenty-five years. Max Factor put her under contract as their spokesperson while still a teenager. During that time her career took off as she graced the covers and pages of every major fashion magazine including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home journal and traveled the world as a sought after international cover girl. During this time she soon became a trusted spokesperson and endorsed numerous commercial products.

In the early 80’s, Cristina co-hosted “AM Los Angeles,” which was the #1 rated morning television show during her five year tenure. Among her many TV appearances, she has hosted her own shows: “Cristina and Friends” and a two hour live show from Universal Studios’ “Home and Family”. She was a substitute co-host on “Good Morning America” and co-hosted numerous times with Regis Philbin on “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee.” Her primetime series for CBS, “Shame on You,” was one of the first magazine format shows that featured consumer fraud and awareness. It set the stage for other prime time magazine formats that followed. For NBC, she co-hosted “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” with Dr. Drew Pinsky. At one time, Cristina had three shows on the air at the same time: the afore mentioned live morning talk show, “AM Los Angeles,” “The Home Show,” and the primetime series “Incredible Sunday” all for ABC. In feature films, she starred opposite David Niven in “The Impossible Years” and the critically acclaimed “J.W. Coop” with Oscar winner, Cliff Robertson.

She is writing weekly blogs for Harpo.com that includes recipes and answers to questions from viewers on her appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Cristina has recently joined the “Oprah family” as regular featuring Oprah’s favorite meals! On The Front Burner with Shauna James Ahern; The Gluten Free Girl and The Chef

This week we are featuring Shauna Ahern of The Gluten Free Girl and The Chef. Shauna was first brought to my attention when one of my good friends had to start eating gluten free. She was raving about this fantastic website that was giving her recipes she could actually use! With 1 in 133 people diagnosed with Celiac Disease, this eating style is a way of life for many people. Shauna makes this way of life a lot easier with her great recipes. Please help me welcome Shauna James Ahern.

Hi. My name is Shauna James Ahern. I am alive.

I have been alive since August of 1966. Or, should I say, I have been on this earth since then. I haven’t always been alive. For much of my life, I felt lousy. Low in energy. Sick and sometimes depressed. I didn’t know why.

Still, I survived. And I laughed deep from my belly, in most moments of the day.
(Well, except for those six months in the seventh grade I was so embarrassed of my loud laugh that I forced myself to let out only a tiny heh.) I adore being here. I am constantly amazed by life and frequently struck by the absurdity of it. Mostly, I’m grateful.

And I’ve been writing about all of this from the moment I could pick up a pen and put words on the page. I’m a writer. I write about little moments of being awake in the world. Sometimes, I write to remind myself to wake up.

And now, at the heart of everything I do, and the monikers of which I’m most proud? I am the wife of my tender-hearted, hilarious husband and the mother of our darling daughter.

Oh, and by the way, like millions of humans in the world, I have to live gluten-free. I have celiac disease, although I chafe at the word disease. Being diagnosed with celiac changed my life, in ways that I could never stop listing. Now, I am no longer low energy, prone to falling ill, or depressed. Now, I am free. Now, I am alive.

And I don’t miss gluten at all.

taken on April 20, 2005 — ten days before diagnosis

taken in early June, 2005 — one month after being gluten-free

In the early spring of 2005, I was terribly ill. My body required 18 hours of sleep a day, my stomach ached all the time, and I could barely move without hurting. Doctors ordered one medical test after another, and none of them yielded answers. (The low point is when I endured a colonoscopy and endoscopy on the same day. Bleh.) All I could eat was soft bread, chicken noodle soup, and crackers. No one understood why I was so ill.

It had been a hard few years. In the winter of 2001, I suffered pneumonia for the sixth time in my life. In the beginning of 2003, I required emergency abdominal surgery for a fibroid tumor that had grown to the size of a grapefruit. In the winter of 2003, I was t-boned by another car, in a terrible accident that changed my life. My body reminded me, every day, how lucky I was to be alive, with pain from the injuries that didn’t go away. Just as I was starting to recover, I fell into that crisis of 2005.

It started to feel like I would never be well.

When I received the official diagnosis — you have celiac — I clapped my hands and said yes! The naturopath was a little surprised to see my celebration.

I’m not the only one who had to fight her way through the medical system to receive the correct diagnosis and become healthy for the first time in my life. Americans have to wait an average of 11 years, and many doctors, before finally being diagnosed. It is estimated that 1 out of 100 Americans has celiac disease. Only 3% of us have been diagnosed.

We have to change this.

After I was diagnosed, I felt reborn. I became a self I had never been before.

And I started writing about it. About amaranth and quinoa, ume plum vinegar, how to braise a lamb shank, and the life of food I began to live. I wrote to teach, to lead other people to the awakeness I was feeling. I love the fascination of the human body; I dissected cadavers in high school. (It was for an advanced biology class.) And yet, I had never heard of the condition that had been commanding me all my life.

I did the only thing I knew how to do. I began to write.

And thus, this website was born.

Since starting her blog in 2005, Shauna has written two books, Gluten Free Girl and Gluten Free Girl and The Chef.

These books are a must for anyone who loves good food and can not eat gluten. Stay tuned this week for amazing recipes, tips, and photography from Shauna, The Gluten Free Girl.

On the Front Burner with Kari Haskell

I am so excited about this week’s feature, Kari Haskell of Retro Bakery. Her cupcakes and photography are simply divine and I am sure you will love her as much as we do.

My name is Kari Haskell. I am the owner and Head of Cupcakes at Retro Bakery. I am a Pro Baker not a chef. I can cook, but I don’t like to cook. I LOVE to bake…simply because you can eat cookie dough.

My husband, Brian, and I opened Retro Bakery in 2008, and we have started a buttercream revolution in Las Vegas. We only top our cupcakes, cakes, and cookies with American buttercream (no shortening…no kidding).

I’m all about the buttercream and always have been. I love butter like I love my babies (Abbi, 12, and Lucy, 6). In fact, my father worked in the butter business for over 29 years.

Retro Bakery is REALLY our third child, and after three years it really is quite the toddler. We feel like we’re chasing it all the time trying to keep up with all the energy!

We now have nine employees with three being full-time. I am nothing without these people, and I consider them all a part of my family. I sincerely love that I can help people live their dreams of being in the dessert world, and they can make a decent living at the same time.

I will admit that it’s not easy. Baking is rough…between lifting 50-lb. bags of sugar and scooping thousands of cupcakes into their pans, your body is constantly aching. And sometimes, so is your heart…because mistakes happen. But, it’s the getting up every day and trying again that makes you a success and let’s you be able to participate in charity events that raise millions for children in need. Cupcakes make people happy, and they make me who I am today.

I love my job. I love my family. I love Las Vegas.

On the front burner with Katie Camarro of “Sundaes Best”

We are so happy to have Katie Camarro with us this week. Katie owns and operates “Sundaes Best” , and spends her days making sumpteous hot fudge sauce for people who love chocolate and the happiness that comes with it. How great is it that we kick off her week on NATIONAL HOT FUDGE SUNDAE DAY, people? Yup, it’s today-July 25th. And if you were thinking about picking any up, Katie’s bottles of hot fudge goodness are 10% in honor of the day, peeps. (We like finding a good deal on deliciousness. AND we like sharing them with people we love.) (That would be y’all. In case you were wondering. )

Two of my favorite quotes are: “If it’s not chocolate why bother” and “Life is uncertain, eat dessert first” by early 20th century writer Ernestine Ulmer….I think he and I could have been friends if I was born sooner. I am the oldest of three children and the one most likely to lie down to put her jeans on everyday. My name is Katie Camarro and I love chocolate, I love food, and I love to laugh!

I have the sweetest job in the world, especially for an American history major. Who would have thought I would spend my days spinning kettles of chocolate into joy in a jar! I grew up in Saratoga Springs, NY the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Saratoga has a special significance to many for its healing spring waters, it’s historical significance as the turning point of the Revolutionary War, and for many sports and equine enthusiasts for its world class horseracing.

To me, Saratoga is where I call home. The place that tugs on your heartstrings and in my world represents the true definition of contentment and the place I want to hang my hat forever.

I love history, horseracing, anything vintage, dogs, animals, and of course anything food. It’s the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning and the last thing I think about before I go to sleep at night. I often wonder how people manage to muddle through their days without being inspired by food….especially sweet food.

My love of chocolate , hot fudge, ice cream and sweets comes naturally. My mom Patty has been known to eat 9 peanut butter cups in one evening. Yes, 9, that is not a typo, and we are not talking miniatures!

She also is famous for having ice cream from Mr. Mumfert’s Dairy Queen on South Broadway in Saratoga Springs during the mid -1960’s as many as 3 times a day. My marvelous Aunt Mary, (Patty’s sister) who I also share my sweet tooth with, loves to tell stories of my pregnant Mom waddling down the brick paved Victorian sidewalks of town on her way to satisfy that sweet tooth and get her dairy allotment in for a healthy baby. Little did she know that I would be a 9.5 pound butterball baby obsessed with chocolate, ice cream, and anything sweet and 47 years later nothing has changed.

Wells College, a small women’s college, nestled on the Eastern Shore of Cayuga Lake in the picturesque and charming village of Aurora, NY was where I earned a liberal arts degree, and gathered the wherewithall and skills that I continually draw from even some 20 years later as I run my own business. After graduation from Wells I fell in love both figuratively and literally with the Finger Lakes region and a dapper young fellafrom Skaneateles NY whose family’s secret recipe keeps me busy jarring chocolate, packing orders and peddling chocolate most of my days.

My husband Jeff and I live in the country just outside of Saratoga, 1 mile from where I grew up, on a small farm with our dogs (2 amazing GreatPyrynees: Sundae and Esher, and 2 senior Jack Russells Brady and Jane) and some pygmy goats. We enjoy our family, friends and animals, and all the beauty that surrounds us in Upstate NY.

Together we spread the love of hot fudge sauce through my business, Sundaes Best (www.sundaesbest.com), which I founded in November of 2001 and can hardly believe that we are celebrating 10 years of making this chocolately goodness.

Currently I am working on my first recipe book, committing to being a more consistent blogger, tracing our family ancestry with my nephews and patiently waiting for George Clooney to call me to star opposite him in his next big picture, and as always…wondering what I will eat next.

Oh yeah, and I am very much looking forward to celebrating my favorite holiday….National Ice Cream Sundae Day! (July 25th) What a great reason to have a sundae; as if you need a reason have ice cream!

In all seriousness, I am blessed to be able to share this family tradition with others and to be able to meld my personal passions with my professional career- I recommend it enthusiastically. My wish for you is that you too follow your dreams, live your passion, laugh with abandon, and that all your days are very sweet.

On the front burner with Sarah Keenan

I love Sarah’s feature in this issue of Where Women Cook…there is something so wonderful and inspiring about reading about someone who realizes their passion and changes paths to follow it.

I am Sarah Spry Keenan, and I come from a family of artists: musicians, painters, cooks…and my Mom is a writer. I am artistic in my own way, but a writer I am NOT (as you may or may not agree as you read on). Cooking is my art. It took me a while to figure this out, hence my mid-life choice to quit my job and go to Culinary School last year. My husband James is a graphic artist and painter himself so he recognized my passion and encouraged me to pursue my dream of becoming a professional chef.

Because I was raised in a family with hardcore health-food freaks, I was fed the purest and freshest foods as a child.

Not until I was well into my adulthood did I come to appreciate that part of my upbringing. However, if as a five-year old you were told that carob chips and raisins were just like chocolate chips in cookies you may have developed some bitterness later as I did, especially towards raisins. My grandmother had a huge garden and raised livestock that included chickens and goats. Both my mother and my grandmother at separate times owned and ran their own health food stores.

My “granola” upbringing went beyond the fresh food aisle. Growing up all over California was amazing. There were camping trips in the Sierras, road trips up and down the coast, and endless days on the beach. My dad used to take my brother and I cherry picking. I remember so vividly how we would sit at the top of the trees and do more eating then picking…then on our way home, we would stop at roadside fruit stands to pick up snacks. In these ways and more, throughout my young life I developed a fulfilling relationship with good, fresh food—it is practically in my blood.

hile I have always found joy in cooking, whether it was a good meal or attempting a new recipe, I think the desire to cook professionally set in when I noticed how the food I cooked for my people made them happy. The energy and love you put into good food…the planning and research, shopping for just the right ingredients, and the time and care preparing it…then comes the moment of truth when you serve it up to the ones you love. There is such gratification knowing you’ve made something really good, really healthy, and really delicious. And then the satisfaction I would get from small victories, like finally making something my picky toddler would eat without any drama - score! That toddler is now a 22-year-old man and a brilliant musician as well as a natural and creative cook in his own right…the family love of food continues into another generation.

The blogging world is fascinating to me, I could easily lose a whole day reading food blogs. I started my own blog –Spry On Food (http://spryonfood.com/) - in March of 2010 to have a creative outlet for my cooking and to share what I had discovered; the creation of a new recipe that turned out awesome, or a cool new ingredient, or my incredible journey through Culinary School. (For more on my school adventures, read the full article in the summer issue of Where Women Cook.) Spry on Food gives me added motivation to continue searching for new and interesting foods, as well as a great structure within which to really flesh out the recipes and processes and share the knowledge with fellow foodies.

Since graduating from culinary school I have worked as a personal chef; tried my hand at catering local events; and I recently had the pleasure of cooking for 55 amazing women at the Gilded Life’s art event in Dallas, Texas. In addition, I have been sprucing up my blog and posting several times a week. I will readily admit I have missed the wonderful experiences I enjoyed during school. Luckily, I am honored to be given the opportunity to return: I will be teaching Thai cooking classes this summer at my alma mater, Laguna Culinary Arts in Laguna Beach, California (http://www.lagunaculinaryarts.com/). Big thanks to Where Women Cook for letting me share my story. Do what you love and you will shine!
