Photography: Cooking with kids

Many mom’s that love to cook love sharing that love and passion with their children. And it’s an even bigger bonus if you love taking photos of the process as you go. Thumbs up to Marsey for such a fun peek into her family kitchen (and for giving us another yummy recipe for our recipe boxes!)

I’m a mom.  So what do I photograph?  My babies, of course!

One of our favorite things has always been to cook together.

Sometimes it’s all monkey business.

But there are important lessons to be learned.

Take turns.  Everyone loves a turn to sift.

Get a lift if you need it.  Step stools are great tools.

Be efficient about how you cut your dough.

To avoid squishing the dough and re-rolling too much, use the odd shaped bits as ‘cloud’ cookies.  Pretend they are clouds and imagine what they might be.

When decorating, sprinkles and writing icing are lots of fun, but only taste good when used with discretion and a bit of restraint.  Moderation in all things!

Families should encourage and celebrate each other’s passions.

And above all, communicate.

Thanks for letting me share my family with you!

Whole Wheat Sugar Cookies

Cream together:

1½ cup butter at room temp

2 cups sugar

Really cream them until they look white and fluffy.

Beat in until well combined:

4 eggs

1 tsp coconut extract

1 tsp vanilla extract

Stir in (sifted together first):

2 cups white whole wheat flour

3 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

Cover or wrap in wax paper and chill 1-12 hours. Roll to ½ inch thickness, cut and bake at 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes. Cool and frost, or sprinkle with sugar before baking. The coconut flavor is slight, but will be a bit more noticeable the 2nd day.

Beautiful cookies!!! Thanks for the recipe, I am always trying to incorporate wheat flour into my recipes……quite challenging most of the time!

  3. What a fun post! I’ve had to learn to be more patient in allowing my kids in the kitchen while I cook. Sugar cookies are one thing we always have fun doing together though.

I’m interested to try your whole wheat recipe and see how my family likes them. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
