I am so excited about this week’s feature, Kari Haskell of Retro Bakery. Her cupcakes and photography are simply divine and I am sure you will love her as much as we do.
My name is Kari Haskell. I am the owner and Head of Cupcakes at Retro Bakery. I am a Pro Baker not a chef. I can cook, but I don’t like to cook. I LOVE to bake…simply because you can eat cookie dough.
My husband, Brian, and I opened Retro Bakery in 2008, and we have started a buttercream revolution in Las Vegas. We only top our cupcakes, cakes, and cookies with American buttercream (no shortening…no kidding).
Retro Bakery is REALLY our third child, and after three years it really is quite the toddler. We feel like we’re chasing it all the time trying to keep up with all the energy!
We now have nine employees with three being full-time. I am nothing without these people, and I consider them all a part of my family. I sincerely love that I can help people live their dreams of being in the dessert world, and they can make a decent living at the same time.
I will admit that it’s not easy. Baking is rough…between lifting 50-lb. bags of sugar and scooping thousands of cupcakes into their pans, your body is constantly aching. And sometimes, so is your heart…because mistakes happen. But, it’s the getting up every day and trying again that makes you a success and let’s you be able to participate in charity events that raise millions for children in need. Cupcakes make people happy, and they make me who I am today.
I love my job. I love my family. I love Las Vegas.
